Laser Hair Removal in Gibraltar — A Skin-Type Guide for Mediterranean Climates

Why Mediterranean Skin Needs a Different Laser Plan
Most laser hair removal advice you'll read online is written for UK skin. Gibraltar is not the UK. Our clients tend toward Fitzpatrick 3-5 — olive through deeper Mediterranean tones — and the wrong laser settings on those skin types either don't work or cause burns. The right ones are safe, comfortable and effective.
This guide covers what's specifically different about laser hair removal in Gibraltar.
Fitzpatrick Skin Types — A Quick Map
Practitioners classify skin on a 1-to-6 scale called the Fitzpatrick scale:
- Type 1-2 — pale, burns easily. Common in northern Europe.
- Type 3 — light olive, tans gradually. Common in southern Spain and parts of Gibraltar.
- Type 4 — olive, rarely burns. Common in Gibraltar, Morocco, Italy.
- Type 5 — brown, never burns. Common in North African and South Asian heritage.
- Type 6 — deeply pigmented. Rare in Gibraltar but treatable.
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. Older alexandrite-only lasers can't distinguish between hair melanin and skin melanin in deeper Fitzpatrick types, which is why those machines should never be used on Type 4-6 skin. Modern Nd:YAG and diode lasers — which is what we use at Bybu — bypass this problem entirely.
Why Summer Is the Wrong Time to Start
Two reasons:
- Tanned skin can't be lasered safely. A laser following the rule "target dark pigment" will target a fresh tan if you have one. That risks pigment damage and burns.
- Post-treatment sun exposure causes hyperpigmentation. Treated skin is photosensitive for two weeks. Direct Mediterranean sun on lasered skin in July is the fastest way to end up with darker patches than you started with.
The right plan: start a course in October. You'll have most sessions done by April, and the maintenance phase can run through summer with appropriate sun avoidance.
A Realistic Course Plan in Gibraltar
For most Fitzpatrick 3-4 clients:
- Sessions 1-3: Four weeks apart. This is when you'll see the most visible reduction.
- Sessions 4-6: Six weeks apart. Catching follicles in slower growth phases.
- Sessions 7-8 (optional): Eight weeks apart. Cleanup for any holdouts.
- Maintenance: One session every 9-12 months from then on.
A full course at Bybu for a small area (underarms, jawline) is £108-£144 across six sessions. Larger areas scale proportionally. Pricing is per session, never up-front package — we want you to be able to stop at any point.
Pain — The Mediterranean Difference
Deeper skin types feel laser hair removal more than paler skin types because there is more melanin for the laser to interact with. The sensation is often described as a hot rubber band flick. We use a cooling tip and a chilled gel layer, which makes a real difference. Most clients tolerate sessions easily; a handful of pain-sensitive clients take ibuprofen 30 minutes before.
Hormonal Hair — A Note for Female Clients
Facial and abdominal hair driven by hormones (PCOS, perimenopause, certain medications) responds differently. Laser still works but the maintenance phase is longer because the hair keeps trying to regrow. Expect 8-10 sessions rather than 6, and maintenance every 6 months rather than annually. A consultation will identify whether hormonal factors are likely contributing.
Aftercare — Gibraltar Edition
- SPF 50 on treated areas for two weeks, even if it's overcast. The reflective light off the Bay still hits.
- No swimming pools for 48 hours — chlorine on freshly treated skin causes irritation.
- No exercise for 24 hours — sweat in heated follicles can trigger folliculitis.
- No exfoliation or retinol on treated areas for one week.
- Hair will shed at 7-14 days. This is normal and means it worked. Don't pluck — let it fall out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is laser hair removal safe on olive or darker Mediterranean skin?
Yes, with the right laser. Modern Nd:YAG and diode systems — what Bybu uses — are specifically designed for Fitzpatrick types 3-6. Older alexandrite-only machines are not safe on darker tones. Always confirm what laser type a clinic uses before booking on Mediterranean skin.
When in the year should I start laser hair removal in Gibraltar?
October is the ideal start. Skin is post-summer and detanning, you have several months of low UV ahead, and the bulk of your course will be done before peak sun returns. Starting in April or May is workable but means most of your course happens with active sun-avoidance.
How many sessions will I need?
Six to eight for most clients. Hormonal areas (face, abdomen for some women) may need eight to ten. After the initial course, one maintenance session per year is typical.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes — shaving is the correct option. Plucking, waxing or threading remove the follicle and break the cycle the laser depends on. Shave the area 24 hours before each session so the laser can find the follicle.
Does laser hair removal hurt more on darker skin?
Slightly, yes. More melanin means more energy is absorbed at the surface. The difference is usually tolerable with the chilled-tip systems we use, and we can reduce settings on areas that are particularly sensitive. A test patch tells us how your skin responds before we commit to a full session.

Free consultations include a test patch on request. We will not start a course on a client whose skin type or hair colour we believe will not respond.
